The workshop was successfully held on 3 May 2010 at Hong Kong Housing Society, Tai Hang, Hong Kong.
It started with an interesting presentation by the overseas speaker, Mark Smalley from Netherlands.
After a short break, the participants split up into three groups and discussed the challenges they were experiencing in their work situation. Each of the groups identified their major challenges and shared with each other during the sharing session. The workshop was concluded at 9:15 pm.
Ms Juliana Li, Director of Strategic Development, shared her feedback after the workshop "Once again, the workshop showed that we should organize more professional development events with group discussion. I can see the participants are very enthusiastic in sharing their ideas and experience over the table and the time is never enough. "

Summary by speaker, Mark Smalley
I gave an introduction to IT Paradigmology, covering some paradigms such as criminal complexity and interaction management (with a short video of Russ Ackhof), the Business IT relationship and the process frameworks ASL and BiSL, after which we ran the workshop.
The participants split up into three groups and discussed the challenges they were experiencing in their work situation. Each of the groups identified their major challenges, which are listed in another part of this paper. Based on the plenary discussion after the groups presented their findings, I reduced these to the following common issues:
- Dealing with complex and immature business organizations
- Poor understanding of, and relationship with, the business
- Speed of business change
One of the participants made the insightful comment that the relationship with the business is quite an emotional topic for IT people.
I made the additional comment that it seemed that IT wasn't making a good job of 'selling' itself to the business.
It was an animated session and I've published the results in a white paper. |

The Hong Kong Chapter highly appreciates Mark Smalley for his time running this workshop during his holiday trip. Mark will prepare a white paper to recap the discussion during the workshop and shared with us the findings from other similar workshops he has run previously. The white paper will be published in our website shortly. Stay tuned.
The Chapter thanks to all participants for presence and look forward to their support in future events.
